Following undergraduate studies, he worked at an environmental services laboratory for several years before attending Oregon State University in Corvallis. There he received his Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry. He spent a postdoctoral year at UNC Chapel Hill in the Department of Environmental Sciences and Engineering.
James started work at UCSB in 1994. While there he maintained the shared MS instrumentation, trained students and researchers, and collaborated with various faculty and researchers. Additionally, James is a founding member of the California Los Padres Section of the America Chemical Society and has served on its Executive Committee in various capacities since 1996.
