What is Apeel?

Apeel is a family of plant-derived coatings that fresh food growers, suppliers, and retailers use to keep produce fresh. Produce with Apeel stays fresh two to three times longer, which promotes more sustainable growing practices, better quality food, and less food waste for everyone. For growers, suppliers, and retailers, Apeel is the only postharvest solution that creates an optimal microclimate inside every piece of produce, which leads to extended shelf life and transportability — with reduced reliance on refrigeration and controlled atmosphere.

How does Apeel keep produce fresh?

Apeel keeps moisture inside produce and oxygen out, which dramatically slows the rate that produce spoils. By maintaining moisture and reducing oxidation, Apeel supports the plant’s natural abilities to protect against environmental stressors.

How does Apeel maintain the quality of produce?

When produce is fresh, it not only looks better but more importantly it tastes better and contains a higher density of nutrients. Apeel makes it possible for growers to optimize their practices and avoid harvesting before ripeness, allowing fruits and vegetables to develop full quality (from nutrition and delicious flavor to appearance and texture) before they embark on the journey to the grocery store.

What is Apeel made of?

Apeel is made of plant-derived materials — lipids and glycerolipids — that exist in the peels, seeds, and pulp of all the fruits and vegetables we already eat.

Is Apeel safe to eat?

Yes! Apeel is edible, safe to eat, and fully compliant with all U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations. Because Apeel is made of widely used plant-derived materials — lipids and glycerolipids — that are commonly found in foods, it is designated FDA GRAS or “Generally Recognized As Safe.”

How is Apeel applied?

Apeel is distributed to our partners as a powder and mixed up with water at the packaging center. Apeel can be applied by spray, dip, or brush on methods. You just need to get the fruit wet with Apeel and then allow it to dry!

Can you taste or smell Apeel after it’s applied?

No, Apeel is colorless, odorless, and tasteless on produce.

What if I have a food allergy?

Allergic responses can be triggered when the protein from an allergenic source is present in a food product. Apeel products are not protein-based, but rather lipid-based — and lipids are not a source of regulated allergens. We also conduct testing to confirm the absence of regulated allergens. That said, if you have a known allergy or sensitivity to a fruit or vegetable, you should continue to avoid it whether or not it is an Apeel fruit or vegetable.

Is Apeel Vegan?

The ingredients in Apeel are not derived from animal sources. This means that consumers who choose to follow a diet that does not incorporate animal products or products that have been derived from animal sources may consider Apeel to be in alignment with their dietary choices.

What types of fruits and vegetables are used to make Apeel?

Because the materials needed to make Apeel exist in all fruits and vegetables, it can be made from any kind of fruit or vegetable — although some fruits and vegetables are richer sources of lipids than others. This includes the parts of the plant that typically go unused after harvesting, such as the peels and seeds.

Can Apeel Sciences products be used on USDA Certified Organic produce?

Yes! Apeel Sciences has formulations that are OMRI Listed® for the growers and distributors of USDA Certified Organic produce. Apeel Sciences’ products help reduce post-harvest food waste, over-packaging, and costly controlled-atmosphere storage.

How are Apeel’s products applied to the surface of fresh fruits and vegetables?

Apeel can be applied in a variety of ways, including widely-used rinse or dip methods, which makes it easy to integrate into established workflows.

Are fruits and vegetables cleaned before Apeel is applied?

All fruits and vegetables that use Apeel are subject to food safety laws of the United States as well as the country where the produce was originally grown.

Can I wash Apeel off?

You could likely remove some of Apeel with water and scrubbing, but it’s unlikely that you’d be able to remove all of it without damaging the fruit. Apeel forms a barrier of edible plant material on the skin or peel, and it wouldn’t maintain the fruit’s natural freshness if it was easily removed. For that reason, we only use food ingredients to make Apeel, so it’s safe to eat along with the fruit. Our partners label produce with Apeel so you can make informed decisions. When considering what produce to buy, check the label and corresponding signage for the Apeel mark.

What types of produce are treated with Apeel at this time?
